He kēmu kupu reo Māori / A daily te reo Māori word game
He kupu iti, he ako ia rā / A little reo, every day

Kimihia te kupu.

Whakamahia te reo, kaua e mataku ki te hē. Use the reo, have a go, and let the clues help you. The interface stays bilingual so both languages support understanding.

Kupu

He reo e ora ana mā te kōrero me te whakamahi. A language lives through being used.

1 / 3

Kōwhiria tō kēmu / Choose your game

Both games are te reo Māori. Kupu Māmā uses familiar everyday kupu. Kupu Matawhenua uses kupu connected with whenua, wai, taiao, wāhi, mapping and GIS mahi.

Ka kaha ake ngā tohu / The hints get stronger

A broad kaupapa opens when row 3 becomes active, a contextual clue at row 4, and a stronger clue at row 5. They help without simply giving the kupu away. If you miss all six rows, you get one fresh attempt. Macrons are displayed correctly, but an ordinary keyboard is enough to play.

Āwhina / How to play

Kimihia te kupu e rima ngā pū. Find the five-letter te reo Māori word in six tries.

Kākāriki / Green — kei te wāhi tika / right letter, right place.
Amipere / Amber — kei roto te pū, kei wāhi kē / right letter, wrong place.
Whero pōuri / Dark red — kāore taua pū i roto / not in the word.

Ngā tohu / Hints

Row 3 opens a broad theme. Row 4 gives context. Row 5 gives a stronger clue. The answer stays hidden unless you solve it or use both complete attempts.

Ngā tohutō / Macrons

The correct spelling is always shown. For ease of typing, guesses without macrons are accepted as the same letters.

Mō Kupu / About Kupu

Kupu is designed as a small daily invitation to use te reo Māori, not as an English word game with Māori decoration added afterwards. The interface keeps te reo and English together so learners can understand the task while becoming more familiar with the reo.

Kupu Māmā / Familiar kupu

This stream uses common te reo Māori words that many people in Aotearoa will already have heard. It is intended as a comfortable entry point and a way to build familiarity through repetition.

Kupu Matawhenua / Whenua & GIS

This stream centres language connected with whenua, wai, taiao, wāhi, observation, movement, relationships and practical GIS. When a kupu is solved, its explanation shows not only a translation but why the concept matters to mapping and spatial mahi.

Te horopaki / Context

A coordinate, layer or polygon never contains the whole meaning of a place. Local ingoa, mātauranga, authority and tikanga belong with the people and communities who hold them. The game uses general learning examples and points back to practical Māori GIS guidance where useful.
