How to think about Māori land boundaries in GIS

- Your boundary layer (the geometry you map)
- Your record layer (what you know about the block, its governance, and how it is used)
Link them with an internal identifier you control and maintain.

Keep personal information out of GIS unless you have a clear purpose, permission, and secure storage.

- Confirm the block name and record context
- Search the block in Pātaka Whenua
- Record the exact block name you will use internally
- Note the governance entity name if present
- Create a project folder structure Use a predictable structure such as:

- 03_outputs
- 04_metadata
- Add imagery for context Use LINZ Basemaps for current imagery.
- Add property and context layers From LINZ Data Service, add layers such as parcels, roads, waterways, and topo features.
If you need live services, use WFS where available. If you need simple display only, use WMS or WMTS.

Common issues and how to avoid them
Block names do not match other datasets
Block naming can differ across sources and time. Store the source name and the date you checked it.
Boundaries are treated as exact when they are not
If a boundary is indicative, label it as indicative in the layer name and in the map output.
Sensitive sites are included in general outputs
Keep sensitive sites in a separate restricted layer with controlled access. Avoid publishing them to public web maps.
