Gazetteer GIS data

The Gazetteer can be used interactively or downloaded for GIS.

The interactive Gazetteer also supports coordinate/grid-reference searches and a unique Name ID URL for each entry.

Stable ID​

Use Name ID as the main external key. A spelling/status can change; the stable source identifier lets the record be checked again.

Geometry types​

A mountain, river, bay or broad feature may be represented by a point, line or polygon according to the Gazetteer's mapping. Do not replace a feature extent with one label point if the line/polygon representation is relevant to your analysis.

Weekly/current data​

LINZ's road/address/place data pages identify place-name data as downloadable through LDS; check the layer revision date when using it in a formal output.
