Awa, wetlands, coast and moana
An awa can be a line in a hydrographic dataset, but that is only one useful representation. The same kaupapa may need the catchment, tributaries, springs, wetlands, riparian areas, monitoring sites, historical channels, restoration work and places described in kōrero.
The GIS should follow the question rather than forcing the awa into a single geometry.
Different representations answer different questions

Useful starting points include:
- regional council environmental data and monitoring portals

- LINZ Data Service for imagery and elevation
- DOC open spatial data
- historical aerial imagery through Retrolens
Public layers provide regional or technical context. Field observations and locally held knowledge can answer different questions.
Awa restoration example
For a riparian restoration project, assemble:
- awa and tributaries
- catchment
- current imagery
- parcels or land blocks where useful for project logistics
- existing vegetation or land-cover information
- planting areas
- access points
- monitoring locations
- photographs and observations
Use Field GIS to collect repeat observations and photographs. Give restoration areas stable IDs so progress can be compared over time.
Wetlands
Wetland extent can vary by source, date and method. Keep the provider and vintage visible. Historic imagery can help show drainage, vegetation and land-use change, while elevation may help explain water movement.
A useful map might compare:
- current published wetland layer
- historical aerial imagery
- DEM or contours
- drains and waterways
- current field observations
The result is evidence for discussion, not an automatic ecological or legal determination.
Coast and estuaries
Coastal GIS often needs several time scales at once. Current imagery shows the present coast. Historical imagery can show movement. Elevation and hazard models can add future scenarios. Kōrero and place names may reveal a longer history of use and change than the modern datasets.
Keep modelled sea-level or erosion scenarios named by scenario and date rather than collapsing them into one future coast polygon.
