Whakapapa and mapping
Whakapapa is relational. GIS is spatial.
The two can work together, but they are not the same thing.
A GIS can show that people, places, events and records are connected. It cannot by itself carry the meaning, obligations, authority and lived relationships contained in whakapapa. A network diagram may show links between names. That does not make it whakapapa in the full sense.
The safest starting point is therefore not to build a giant genealogy database with coordinates attached.
Start with the kaupapa.
Ask what the map needs to do
Whakapapa may be relevant to GIS when the work needs to understand relationships such as:
- whānau connections to whenua
- succession and land interests
- relationships between marae and places
- tūpuna associated with particular events or locations
- migration, occupation or movement over time
- the provenance of kōrero, photographs or records
- who should be approached for local knowledge or review
Different purposes need different representations.
A map prepared to support a whānau discussion about whenua does not need the same data as a whakapapa archive. A public history map needs even less.
Separate the whakapapa system from the spatial index
A strong pattern is to keep whakapapa in the system or practice that already governs it, and let GIS hold only the minimum references needed for the spatial task.
For example, the GIS might contain:
- a stable internal
person_refrather than full whakapapa - a
whanau_refor approved group identifier - an archive reference
- a note that additional whakapapa context exists
- a kaitiaki or contact role
- the kaupapa for which the spatial relationship was recorded
The whakapapa itself can remain in a controlled whakapapa system, archive, whānau record or oral process.
This avoids creating a second uncontrolled genealogy database simply because GIS can store tables.
Living people require particular care
Spatial data about living people can expose much more than a family tree.
Combining names with addresses, land interests, health information, social data, whānau relationships or sensitive places can create identification and inference risks.
Useful defaults include:
- do not place living people's full whakapapa in general GIS layers
- avoid public maps that connect named people to exact whenua or household locations
- use role or group references where individual identity is not necessary
- keep personal information in systems designed to protect it
- review whether a derived map could reveal information even after names are removed

One person can have many relationships to place
A conventional database often wants one clean relationship between a person and a location.
Whakapapa does not behave that way.
Connections may include:
- birth or residence
- tūrangawaewae
- whenua interests
- marae affiliations
- significant events
- burial
- movement between places
- relationships through several whakapapa lines
Do not force these into a single home_place or tribe field.
If the mapping kaupapa genuinely requires several relationships, store the relationship type and context rather than trying to select one definitive location.
Avoid turning whakapapa into eligibility geometry
GIS can be tempting when organisations need to answer questions about representation, services, voting, benefits or membership.
Be cautious about using spatial boundaries as a proxy for whakapapa.
A person does not become more or less connected because their current address falls inside or outside a polygon. Likewise, an iwi area of interest, settlement area or statistical geography is not a substitute for whakapapa.
Where an administrative process requires geography, label it as an administrative rule rather than allowing the map to imply a cultural truth.
Mapping tūpuna and historical movement
Historical mapping can be powerful when it helps whānau see relationships among people, places and events.
A useful workflow is:
- Start with a specific kaupapa, such as one whānau, one period or one set of records.
- Identify the source for each relationship and place.
- Record uncertainty rather than inventing exact locations.
- Keep differing accounts where they exist.
- Use time as part of the map where movement matters.
- Keep sensitive whakapapa or private whānau material out of public derivatives.
A journey or sequence may communicate more than a cluster of points.
Do not rank whakapapa
Avoid fields that try to quantify ideas such as:
- strength of connection
- percentage connection to a place
- cultural importance of a whānau
- legitimacy of one relationship over another
Those may be administratively convenient but can create false hierarchies and conflict.
If a particular governance process genuinely requires a rule, document the rule as a governance decision. Do not present the number as something the GIS discovered.
Use whakapapa to improve provenance
There is another useful way whakapapa thinking can strengthen GIS: apply it to the data itself.
For an important dataset, keep its own whakapapa:
- who created it
- from what sources
- for what kaupapa
- who changed it
- what decisions shaped it
- what versions came before it
- what derived products came from it
- who holds authority over reuse
This makes a dataset easier to understand across generations of staff and reduces the risk of a detached file becoming treated as context-free truth.
A practical pattern
For a whānau or hapū project, use three layers of information rather than one giant database:

Spatial layer
- approved places, areas or routes
- minimal identifiers
- sensitivity and purpose

Relationship table
- approved links between places, records, whānau groups or events
- relationship type and source

Controlled knowledge source
- whakapapa records, interviews, archive material or detailed kōrero held under the appropriate tikanga and access arrangements
The GIS points toward the knowledge. It does not have to absorb all of it.
