Legacy Māori Land Court Spatial Data May 2017

A public ArcGIS FeatureServer for Māori Land Court Spatial Data May 2017 remains reachable. It is valuable because many older maps, projects and tutorials used this generation of data. Its age must remain visible.

Open the ArcGIS REST service

The service describes the dataset as a combination of spatial data used by the former Māori Land Online map search and static management-structure information. Its spatial reference is NZTM2000.

Add it to a GIS

In QGIS, use the ArcGIS Feature Server/REST connection or the layer REST endpoint. In ArcGIS Pro, add the service URL through the portal/server connection tools.

Immediately rename the layer locally so its date remains obvious:

Māori Land Court spatial data — May 2017 (legacy)

Inspect before analysing

Do not rely on an old schema description. Open the service layer definition and inspect the actual fields in your GIS before writing expressions or joins. Preserve original block identifiers and names.

Good uses

  • compare what the public court GIS represented in 2017 with current Pātaka research
  • reconstruct an older project
  • locate candidate blocks for documentary checking
  • study changes in public spatial representation

Poor uses

  • current ownership list
  • current trustee or management information
  • proof of current Māori land status
  • definitive current legal boundary

For current research start with Pātaka Whenua, then add current LINZ cadastral data.
