Investigating an awa
An awa investigation works better when the catchment and connected waterways are the organising geography rather than only a buffer around a river centreline.

river network → catchment → LiDAR → current imagery → historical imagery → wetlands/land cover → Māori land → place names → environmental monitoring → archives
1. Define the reach and outlet
Identify the named awa/reach and the outlet relevant to the question. Catchment boundaries depend on outlet and dataset scale.
2. Terrain
Use LINZ/OpenTopography terrain to inspect valley floor, terraces, tributaries, old channels and possible flow paths.
3. Image time series
Compare historical aerials with current imagery. Record season/flow/tide where those factors can alter interpretation.
4. Land cover and whenua
Add wetland, land-cover, land-use, Māori land and parcel context. Use them as overlapping evidence rather than treating land administration as the boundary of the environmental system.
5. Monitoring
Add LAWA/regional-council/NIWA monitoring sites where relevant, keeping sample location, parameter and period explicit.
6. Historical names and records
Search place names, maps and documentary references upstream/downstream. A named tributary or former channel can unlock archival searches.
