Web services in ArcGIS

ArcGIS works most naturally with ArcGIS REST services, but it can also connect to OGC WFS and WMTS.

Prefer ArcGIS REST where LINZ publishes it​

LINZ publishes selected key datasets through ArcGIS REST specifically to simplify Esri integration. When the required dataset is available there, use it before building a WFS workaround.

WFS in ArcGIS Pro​

LINZ provides a current step-by-step WFS guide for ArcGIS Pro. It recommends layer-specific connections because ArcGIS Pro can struggle with the full catalogue. Large layers can also require a maximum-features setting or other limits to avoid timeouts.

Use the layer-specific service URL from the dataset page when practical.

WMTS​

Add the provider's WMTS service as a server/OGC connection or URL item. For LINZ aerial imagery, use the current Basemaps instructions rather than historic raster URLs.

ArcGIS Online​

ArcGIS Online can add supported OGC services and REST URLs as items. Check sharing on the service/item and downstream web map separately.
