Deed plans and attachments

Deed attachments can contain the clearest maps of settlement redress. Treat each plan as a legal/documentary attachment with its own plan number and purpose.

Prefer source geometry when available

Before manually digitising a PDF map, search LINZ, DOC, council or settlement-related data for a published GIS representation. If none exists and digitising is useful, keep the result labelled as digitised from deed plan [number].

Do not merge every plan

A vesting property, statutory acknowledgement, overlay classification and RFR area have different legal effects. Use separate layers/fields.

Geometry accuracy

A deed plan may say for identification purposes only or rely on legal descriptions/survey plans. Do not advertise the GIS digitisation as cadastral precision merely because the PDF line looks sharp.
