Mapping settlement data

A settlement can produce many spatial layers with different purposes. Keep them distinct.

Separate layers

  • area of interest — negotiation/context representation
  • statutory acknowledgement areas
  • overlay classifications
  • cultural redress properties
  • commercial redress properties
  • RFR land
  • official/collected geographic names
  • Crown forest licensed land where relevant

Do not union them into iwi boundary

The combined footprint of settlement mechanisms does not define the full relationship of iwi/hapū with whenua, nor a definitive exclusive boundary.

Map source and effect

Use a legend such as:

Statutory acknowledgement area — [Settlement Act, Schedule X]

rather than simply Treaty area.

Use time

Settlement deeds/Acts have dates; properties may transfer later; RFR land can leave the regime; names become official on defined dates. Add date/status fields where the map is intended to survive beyond one report.

For rohe representation see Mana whenua and rohe without hard boundaries.
